Changing Fix For After a Case is Closed

I'd like the ability to change the Fix For field after a bug is closed.

At the root of my request is the fact that the Fix For field has two different meanings. While a case is active, it means "The first release which MUST have this fix". After the case is closed, it means "The first release which WILL have this fix". I have a bunch of ambitious developers who frequently fix bugs ahead of schedule, which means that the first release which WILL have the fix is often an earlier release than the first release which MUST have the fix. If I want my release notes to be correct, I need to change the Fix For field whenever that happens, and the most reasonable way to do that is with a batch operation on closed cases at the time of a release.

Probably not the answer you want to hear, but if I was in your situation I'd be fixing your "bunch of ambitious developers". If you've lost the ability to control the changes developers in each release then fudging the fix-for to get your release notes right is the least of your worries.

Andrew: It sounds like we have different ideas about how to manage developers. I often want to give my developers the flexibility to fix a bug by a given release or earlier. You choose to be more specific. I'm perfectly willing to acknowledge that your approach is valid, but I resent your implication that, with my approach, I've "lost control" -- I have an management approach which works; I'm just looking for a tool to facilitate it. FogBugz is almost there.

Well, maybe "lost control" was a little bit harsh; no offence was intended, and my apologies if it came across as such.

What about simply changing the Fix For *when* the bug is closed? I.E., as part of the bug closing process, you (or whoever) go up to the Fix For field and set it to the next release.
