suddenly, POP inbox gets "stuck" much more frequently

We have generally had reliable performance from the POP inbox we've set up for customer support email in the three weeks we've been running FogBugz. Initially, the inbox was getting stuck quite frequently, and I attributed that to a ridiculously high polling frequency -- every 45 seconds. Tuning that down to 180 seconds seemed to help.

However, in the past two days, this same inbox has been getting stuck every hour or two. Our email volume hasn't really increased, nor has anything in our email system setup changed. After I restart it, email does continue to flow in, so it's not a configuration problem. I've set the polling interval to 600 seconds.

If there's an obvious KB entry for avoiding this specific trouble, my apologies for missing it. I just wonder what might be dragging down the system's previously self-sustaining capabilities. Thanks for any help you can offer, folks.

A couple things I can think of, but they all usually relate to timeouts, both POP3 server timeouts and database connection timeouts.

One thing you might want to try is in preheader.asp right after the dbGlobal.Open strConnect call is to add

dbGlobal.CommandTimeout = 600

to up your database connection timeout.  Usually if your database is dragging, this will fix the problem.

Also, there is usually an error message displayed when a message cannot be imported (or gets stuck).  It sometimes says Timeout Expired, but it may say something else..

Thanks, Michael. We'll investigate our settings. Oddly enough, things seem to have settled back down today, so I hope it was a particular combination of messages that knocked us around rather than anything specific about our config.
