how does fogbugz pull email from pop? Windows service?

how does fb pull email from a pop3 server?

Is it done on a interval basis using a windows service or something else?

If you are running FogBugz on your own server, the FogBugz Maintenance Service hits /heartbeat.asp (or /heartbeat.php on FogBugz PHP), which performs periodic tasks for your FogBugz site.  One of these tasks is pulling mail from your POP3 mailboxes.  FogBugz On Demand has a similar background task that also periodically polls any mailboxes you have set up.

Yes, and we use Dart libraries to do so on the Windows version, if you want to get deep into it.

So does this mean you can't install FB on a shared hosting account that doesn't allow for windows services?

That is correct.  However, if you can get FogBugz installed on such a host, anything that repeatedly hits /heartbeat.asp will be able to fill in for the FogBugz Maintenance Service.

If you do not have root access or administrator access to the machine, you will not be able to install FogBugz (regardless of whether it is a shared host or not).  There are just too many things that have to happen during the installer...
