Discussion Groups - setting width

I'm trying to widen the area where the content of posts appear.  I've tried different ways of modifying the CSS, but nothing works.  For example, this changes the display font of the posts, but the width is always the same.

.discussBody
{
    font-family: 'Couier New' , Courier, monospace;
    font-size: small;
        width: 1000px;
}

Ideally, i'd like to make the width extend to the end of the browser window.  Can someone tell me the CSS i need to put in to do this?  Thank you much for your help.

This might work:

although I'm not sure if that applies to discussion groups.
