Strange Smtp Problem

Hi,

we are currently still using FogBugz 5.0.31 and recently a really strange problem occured. FogBugz is unable to send any emails which can be tracked down to a problem in communication with our smtp server.

We did not change any settings prior to this, nor did our ISP(according to them, of course), switching to the IIS-integrated smtp server, didn´t help either.

Diagnostics returned this at Step 6:

R: 220 ourServer Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.3959 ready at  Mon, 24 Sep 2007 17:17:06 +0200
S: EHLO ourServer

RCPT TO:<me.myself@company.com>
R: 503 5.5.2 Need Mail From: first
S: QUIT
R: 221 2.0.0 ourServer Service closing transmission channel

IIS-Log then shows something like this:

2007-09-24 15:49:10 ***.***.**.** ourServer SMTPSVC1 ourServer ***.***.**.** 0 EHLO - +ourServer 250 0 201 14 0 SMTP - - - -

2007-09-24 15:49:10 ***.***.**.** ourServer SMTPSVC1 ourServer ***.***.**.** 0 QUIT - ourServer 240 0 58 4 0 SMTP - - - -

This problem also occurs with our ISP´s Server. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

We do not really want to update at this time as everything was fine until this happened.

Thanks in advance,
Joris Bauer

Have you tried sending mail via a telnet session?

Yes i tried, sending mail via telnet (and "normal" email clients) works fine with both servers.

Turns out it was the Antivirus-Software on our FogBugz server which after a recent update somehow "sabotaged" the smtp communication. This only happened on the server with w2k3.

Which AntiVirus was it?

GData AntiVirenKit 2007 (commercial, uses Kaspersky and Avast)

Were there specific steps that fixed it (looking to add this to our knowledge base)?

This antivirus software was listening on the outgoing smtp-port and blocked outgoing emails from FogBugz somehow doing so(or better "sabotaged" the communication somehow).
This has to be a problem specific to windows 2003 and our antivirus software, as we did not see any problems sending emails on any other os.
We have another application on that server sending emails sometimes, which worked when FogBugz didn´t. That application uses the default ASP.Net methods to send those emails.
Somehow FogBugz (or DartMail) must send emails a slightly other way.
I didn´t blame the antivirus software first as everything worked for quite some time and i didn´t noticed there was an update.
To fix that issue i told the antivirus software not to listen on that port.
