Table Creation in the Wiki, FB6

Hi,

I'm looking for a fast way to create tables in the FB6 Wiki. At the moment we use Mediawiki for our documentation. We have an Excel VBA program that converts spreadsheets to Mediawiki tables so that we can create long tables offline in Excel and paste them quickly into our Wiki.

Ideally, I would like to move from Mediawiki to the FB Wiki, so my question is "Is there a quick way to build tables for FB Wiki from an Excel spreadsheet?"

An alternative question might be "Is it possible to paste a string of text into the FB Wiki that creates a table?"

Thanks, James

There's no simple way to do this at the moment, unfortunately.

The good news is that creating a huge table in the FogBugz wiki is very simple, you can just press tab to move from cell to cell and new rows will be created as needed.

However, if you must have this functionality, you can always:

-Use Excel's "Save as Web Page" functionality after creating your table

-Open the HTML file created by Excel in a browser

-Select all, copy, paste into the FogBugz wiki

This isn't the prettiest solution, but it'll work.

Actually I just tested it out and you can paste tables directly from Excel into the FogBugz wiki.

Of course, you'll probably want to right-click on the table afterwards and select a table style from your wiki's CSS/template.

(This works better in Firefox than IE b/c FF doesn't bring along all of the table's Microsoft specific styles when pasting from Excel.)

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the quick replies.

I hadn't thought of simply cutting and pasting, but it does seem to work quite nicely.

For what it's worth (and these points are so minor that I hesitate to mention them), I'd like to see a few more options for setting/changing borders and background colours.

The only other thing I don't seem able to do is change the formatting on all members of a range of highlighted cells - only the first cell changes, so I have to highlight and change each in turn. Is this deliberate?

Finally, FB6 looks great and we'll be running our upgrade this evening (or so I'm told by my technical colleagues).

Thanks, James
