Possible bug: Send email gets object reference error

We were having some issues with our smtp reflector, which is what we point FogBugz at for sending emails. It's worked for many months, but the reflector decided to barf. We installed new software at the same IP address. All the other apps which use the reflector began working correctly at that point.

However, FogBugz was putting "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" errors in its list of site errors. This message was *not* a return string from the reflector - it was something in how FB was processing the results of the SMTP protocol that was different than our previous reflector.

I looket at our FB email configuration. The only thing that looked curious was that I had provided an SMTP user ID but no password. We didn't need authentication to use the reflector, but it had been configured that way and working for many months. On a whim, I removed the configuration of the SMTP user ID. That seems to have solved the problem.

So there must be something between FB and our new SMTP software (not sure what package - our infrastructure group took care of this) where FB doesn't have sufficient resilience to that configuration.

This is a vestige of an old bug, where Firefox thought the SMTP User edit field was a username to be filled in.  If you visited the mail setup tab, it would fill it in for you and, even better, not allow you to blank it out!

I'd bet that the username you had in there was not even an SMTP username, but your login (or another admin's login).

Our old mail libraries didn't care about this, but our new ones error out on it. We're trying to figure out what to do about this.

Hi Donnie,

I'm looking to reproduce this behavior, and our internal open-relay mail server responds fine even if you give it a username with no password.  Can you find out from your infrastructure group what the mail server is that FogBugz is pointed to?  That should help us get closer to finding a solution to this problem.

Thanks,
